Doing what I love

I have been asking myself “Why do I love creating and selling glass so much?”

It is a much bigger question that that. What drives a person to get up in the morning? What does somebody want other people to say about them? What motivates a person? We all ask ourselves those questions sometimes.

I feel that I have been fortunate enough to find some of the answers to those questions….for me.

I come from a family of self-employment. It all sounds like it is about freedom and adventure, however, it is more about what drives you. Being self employed is about doing what you love…..all the time. Gawd, you better love it.

My first round of self employment was auditing medical bills. Sooooo different than being an artist, right? Well, I got into that because my father was self employed billing college students for their student loans. He loved it. He loved the logic and the process of it all. He got to meet the decision makers at the colleges and go have drinks with them and solve their billing problems. He loved being the logical solution AND build a relationship.

I hated medical billing. It was a good business for me and paid my bills, but I felt that any other company could be just as much of a solution as I was. So there wasn’t a passion in that for me.

I did a few other bouts of self employment in my time, however, I fell into customer service, operations, and logistics for a medical supply company. I loved it! I loved helping customers get what they needed while providing a “win” for the company I worked for. I was starting to figure something out about myself. I loved helping and organizing.

So how does that lead up to being an artist? I love the voice that I get being an artist. I get to take an object and use it to make my statement. I make something that has a bit of my personality and soul in it and share that with other people. I am so blessed that people spend their hard earned money on some of my pieces. For that, I am always thankful.

Today, I am very blessed to be an artist and also work for a small business that allows me to stretch my entrepreneurial wings. I am still in the process of finding that “driving factor” on a daily basis, but every day I find a bit more.
